Why Women Don’t Need More Motivation – They Need Nervous System Safety

I have lost count of the number of women who have sat in my clinic and said exactly the same thing: “I know what I need to do… I just can’t seem to do it.” These are not women who lack ambition, intelligence or discipline.

Many have spent decades leading teams, running successful businesses, raising families and keeping everyone else’s world turning. They know the tools. They know the systems. They’ve bought the planners and diaries, read the books, listened to the podcasts and invested in the courses.

They know exactly what they should be doing, yet somehow they just can’t seem to do it consistently anymore.

This is something I see time and time again, particularly with women navigating perimenopause and menopause. Somewhere along the way, they begin to question themselves.

They wonder where their motivation has gone. They tell themselves they need to try harder, become more disciplined or find a better system. They compare themselves to the woman they used to be and wonder why everything suddenly feels so much harder than it once did.

If I’m honest, I’ve been there myself.

Not long ago I read The ONE Thing by Gary Keller. It challenged me more than I expected. The whole premise is beautifully simple: stop trying to do everything and focus on one thing. Yet for someone like me, who naturally spins lots of plates, that felt incredibly uncomfortable.

My mind was constantly juggling ideas, projects and opportunities. I had what felt like fifteen tabs permanently open in my brain, spreading my energy across all of them instead of closing a few and giving my full attention to what really mattered.

At first, focusing on just one thing almost felt wrong. Surely I should be doing more? Surely successful people juggle everything? But the more I practised it, the more I realised something important. I wasn’t becoming more productive because I’d suddenly found more motivation. I was becoming more productive because I had finally given my brain the space it needed to think clearly again.

That experience made me reflect on what I witness every single day with the women I work with. The problem is rarely that they don’t know what to do. It isn’t that they haven’t read enough books or bought enough planners. It certainly isn’t laziness.

More often than not, the real issue is that their nervous system is exhausted.

Sometimes we don’t even realise how stressed we are until we stop. We become so used to carrying responsibility, meeting deadlines, supporting everyone else, running businesses, managing households and constantly thinking about the next thing that living under pressure simply becomes our normal.

We convince ourselves we’re coping because we’re still functioning, yet underneath the surface our body is telling a very different story.

Chronic stress changes how we think, how we make decisions and how we respond to the world around us. It affects our concentration, our memory, our ability to prioritise and our emotional resilience.

Add the hormonal changes that many women experience during perimenopause and menopause, and it’s hardly surprising that so many begin to feel overwhelmed, scattered or unlike themselves. They aren’t failing; their nervous system is simply trying to protect them.

When our nervous system shifts into survival mode, consistency becomes incredibly difficult. We procrastinate, overthink, lose confidence in our decisions, start ten jobs without finishing one and then criticise ourselves for not having enough willpower.

We wonder why we can’t seem to hold our feet to the fire anymore, when the reality is that our brain is prioritising survival over performance.

This is why I believe we’ve been asking ourselves the wrong question for far too long. Instead of asking, “How can I become more motivated?” perhaps we should be asking, “What is actually driving how I’m showing up?” Because transformation doesn’t begin with discipline. It begins with understanding.

What’s happening underneath the surface? Is it years of chronic stress? Is it the hormonal shifts of midlife? Is it the exhaustion that comes from putting everyone else’s needs before your own for decades? Is it subconscious beliefs that have quietly shaped your behaviour for years without you even realising?

These are the conversations that matter because until we begin to understand what’s driving our behaviour, we simply keep trying harder. We buy another planner, another course, another productivity app, hoping that this one will finally be the answer.

Yet if the nervous system still feels overwhelmed and unsafe, no planner in the world will create lasting change.

The encouraging news is that our brain and body are incredibly adaptable. Research continues to show that lifestyle factors such as stress management, restorative sleep, movement, nutrition and meaningful human connection have a profound impact on our wellbeing.

Small, consistent changes really do matter, but they become much easier to make once we stop fighting ourselves and start understanding ourselves instead.

This is why I do the work I do. As a Women’s Transformation Architect, my role isn’t simply to help women manage symptoms. It’s to help them understand the deeper patterns that have been influencing how they think, feel and behave for years.

Because when we identify those hidden drivers, women stop seeing themselves as broken. They stop believing they’ve somehow lost the confident, capable woman they once were. Instead, they begin to understand that their mind and body have simply been doing their best to protect them.

So before you buy another diary, another planner or another course, pause for a moment and ask yourself one simple question: What is actually driving how I’m showing up right now?

The answer to that question is often far more powerful than another productivity system, because lasting transformation has never been about trying harder. It’s about understanding yourself more deeply and creating the safety that allows real change to happen.
