Letโs be real for a second- weight gain during perimenopause and postmenopause can feel infuriating.
Youโre doing all the things that used to work: cutting carbs, ditching sugar, skipping meals, upping your workoutsโฆ But now? Crickets. No shift on the scales. Maybe even the opposite.
I get it….before I hit menopause, I could drop a few pounds in days just by tightening up my meals. But now, that old rulebook is useless. Because the reasons we gain weight in this season are different.
And if we donโt adapt, we end up spinning our wheels, feeling deflated, and blaming ourselves. Letโs change that.
If youโre nodding along, youโre not alone, and youโre not doing it wrong. You just need menopause weight loss tips that actually work for this stage of life.
Here are three common mistakes I see women making when trying to lose weight during menopause, and what to do instead:
1 . Going Too Hard with Exercise
More isnโt always more…..especially now.
If youโre overtraining, pushing through exhaustion, and expecting results, your body might actually be interpreting it as stress.
And hereโs the thing: stress during menopause can send your cortisol soaring, triggering fat storage (especially around the belly), slowing your metabolism, and draining your energy.
Iโve worked with women whoโve come to me after working with PTs that left them feeling weaker, not stronger. Tired. Deflated. And heavier than when they started.
Movement should feel nourishing, not punishing – we need to also change our worksout in conjunction to our cycle !!
For the last part of our cycle (the week before you bleed)….think walking, swimming, yoga, Tai Chi, Qi Gong. Move your body in ways that build energy (help progestrone hormone happy) not burn it all out.
2. Slashing Calories & Skipping Meals
When you under-eat, your body doesnโt say โgreat, letโs burn fat.โ
It says โfamine!โ
So it slows your metabolism to protect you. Especially now, with your hormones in flux, that strategy backfires fast.
Yes-intermittent fasting might have worked in your 30s. But now? It can make your body cling to fat and ramp up other menopause symptoms like anxiety, poor sleep, and low mood โ unless you know how to do it correctly!!
Start your day with a nourishing breakfastโprotein, healthy fats, and fibre. It stabilises blood sugar, calms cravings, and helps your body feel safe to let go of excess weight.
3. Cutting Out Fat
Weโve been conditioned to fear fat, thanks to decades of dodgy diet advice pushed by the sugar industry.
But hereโs whatโs true: you need fatโฆ.especially now.
It supports hormone production (which your body is already struggling with), balances mood, and helps you absorb vital nutrients.
No, Iโm not saying drown everything in oilโฆbut stop fearing it.
What to focus on?
- Butter
- Olive oil
- Coconut oil
- Avocado oil
- Full-fat milk (organic if you can)
- Even lard or dripping from grass-fed sources
And what to avoid?
๐ซ Seed oils like sunflower or canola
๐ซ Trans fats or anything โhydrogenatedโ in processed foods
Bottom lineโฆ..
Your body isnโt broken.
Itโs just different now.
